Protein Industries Canada set to meet Innovation Supercluster Initiative targets

Posted:

Regina, Sask. – Along with Canada’s four other Superclusters, Protein Industries Canada has been making significant progress in its initiatives. Since its first project was announced in June of 2019, the plant-protein-focused Supercluster has committed $99.9 million to 14 active projects, leveraging a further $172 million from industry.

Eleven of those 14 projects have been announced, with the others set to be announced by the end of 2020. Protein Industries Canada expects the remainder of its allotted Innovation Supercluster Initiative funds—a total of $153 million—to be committed to projects by the end of the 2020-21 fiscal. With one project nearing approval and six others in the approval pipeline, there’s clearly a strong interest among industry for our initiative to prosper.

“I am proud of the companies we are working with and the projects we are co-investing in,” Protein Industries Canada CEO Bill Greuel said. “Our investments demonstrate the potential of Canada’s agrifood sector and the opportunity to be a leader in the production of ingredients, food and feed.”

Thanks to our partners and the investments we’ve made together, our 14 active projects are expected to create 225 new products, 77 new processes and 44 new IP filings. Preliminary economic analysis completed on some of our early projects shows that we are on track to not only meet, but exceed our target of $4.5 billion on GDP and 5,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The Supercluster initiative is working. Our work, and that of our partners, is helping Canada’s plant-protein sector become a global trade leader. As our rapid pace of approvals and announcements continues, we’ll be ready to help the sector fulfill this role.
